Some of our Dutch gang took a half day trip out of Amsterdam to check out the windmills of Zaanse Schans, a neighborhood in the city of Zaandam. About a 30 minute train ride north of Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans is best known for the historic old windmills and houses on the Zaan River. In the 18th-19th centuries, this region had hundreds of windmills producing everything from paint to mustard to paper. Most of the windmills here now are museums and gift shops. While the area is quite touristy, it is still nice to walk around and take in the views of the river, green painted houses and windmills and imagining what it was like two centuries ago. |
